HEKA practice spotlight: Tandlægerne Fyrvej in Esbjerg

Esbjerg is a Danish port city on the North Sea. The city is the gateway to the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site with unique nature and rich birdlife.

At Tandlægerne Fyrvej in Esbjerg, there is a constant buzz of activity, development, and strong team spirit. With 10 dentists, 6 dental hygienists, a large team of dental assistants, trainees, and external specialists, the practice is among the largest in the region – and is now in the middle of an exciting expansion that will make the facilities even more modern and functional.

Practice in growth

Over the past several years, the practice has experienced significant growth, leading to both extensions and now a major renovation. When the neighboring property came up for sale, they seized the opportunity to create optimal settings for both patients and staff.

“We wanted to gather everything in one location. It strengthens collaboration, builds a stronger team spirit, and ensures that professionalism and well-being go hand in hand,” says director Rikke Falkenby Skytte.

Focus on patients, work environment, and professionalism

Tandlægerne Fyrvej works with three clear perspectives: patients, employees, and professional standards.

  • Patients are welcomed into a calm and safe environment, designed to create reassurance – particularly important for those with dental anxiety.

As Rikke explains: “When patients feel safe, treatment outcomes are better. That’s why we’ve built the entire practice around both professional quality and well-being.”

  • Employees benefit from a special focus on workplace culture – including a shared, paid lunch break where the entire practice closes so everyone can eat together.
  • Professionalism is supported by modern equipment, specialized treatment rooms, and close teamwork between dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants.

The entire staff has been actively involved in the renovation process, ensuring that the physical spaces suit daily workflows. “Whenever we renovate, we always start from the perspective of those working in each room every day. For example, our dental assistants have had major influence on the layout of the sterilization area, while dentists and assistants together have shaped the treatment rooms. Everyone has contributed their experience – and it makes a huge difference,” Rikke notes.

As she summarizes: “It’s important for us that all professional groups are heard. They are the ones who best know how to create the best workflows and conditions.”

Specialization and collaboration

The practice covers a wide range of specialties – from root canal and periodontal treatments to advanced surgery. The associated surgeons and dentists perform procedures at a level that makes Tandlægerne Fyrvej a natural referral practice for many dentists in South and Southern Jylland.

“We greatly value collaboration with other dentists. Our goal is not to take over patients, but to be a strong partner who can assist when treatments become particularly complex,” Rikke explains.

Ethical responsibility and education

Tandlægerne Fyrvej also takes responsibility for the future of dental professionals. The practice has both dental assistant trainees and welcomes newly qualified dentists and dental hygienists.

“We believe that a practice of our size has an ethical responsibility to give young professionals a good start to their careers. It benefits both them and us when new knowledge and fresh perspectives meet experience,” says Rikke.

Students also get the chance to explore dentistry in practice. For instance, the practice employs a young gap-year assistant considering studying to become a hygienist or dentist. “It gives her a unique opportunity to get a feel for everyday life in the practice – while also being a great help to us during busy days,” says Rikke.

A glimpse into the future

Once the renovation is complete, the practice will not only be able to welcome even more patients but also provide the most modern facilities for employees and specialists – including HEKA’s UnicLine S units in all treatment rooms.

The renovation has been carried out in close collaboration with ab dental service in Silkeborg, whose experience and dedication have been an invaluable support throughout the project.
